The two biggest threats to the independence of Senior Citizens:
1. Falls
2. Failure to take medications as prescribed
Falls: Statistics show that:
* 25% of people between 65 and 74 years of age fall each year.
* 43% of people aged 75 and older fall each year.
* 2/3 of people who suffer a fall will fall again within 6 months.
* Of those who fall, 20% to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries.
* More than 20% of the time, fall victims lay incapacitated for more than 12 hours.
* There is a 1 in 7 chance of a fall within 30 days of discharge from a healthcare facility and a 1 in 8 chance of readmission due to a fall within the first 30 days after the initial discharge.
* People found within one hour of a fall are 5 times more likely to survive than those who remain helpless for over 12 hours.
* "For elderly people who live alone, becoming incapacitated and unable to get help is a common event, which usually marks the end of their ability to live independently."
Medication non-compliance:
* Over 60% of prescribed medication in the U.S. is not taken as directed.
* 25% of all hospital and nursing home admissions by persons 60 and older is due to their failure to take prescription medications as directed. (average cost for assisted living facility - $2,000/mo, average nursing home cost - $6,000/mo)
How effective Medical Alert Systems?
A study by the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that subscribers of P.E.R.S. (personal emergency response systems) have far fewer hospital admissions and shorter stays after they subscribe, thereby allowing them to live independently longer.
Another recent survey found people utilizing P.E.R.S. stay independent in their own homes nearly 20% longer than non-users.
